Walmer House

Built in the late 19th century, Walmer House is a substantial detached Victorian villa located within the Upton Conservation Area which has stood vacant for some time. It is at risk of gradual deterioration without a viable long-term use.

With its impressive original frontage and retained period detailing, Walmer House is recognised as a locally important property which makes a positive contribution to the conservation area.

Walmer House Community Homes’ proposal will breathe new life into the empty building, sensitively restoring and preserving prominent features, bringing it back into active use as a community asset for Torquay.

Proposals for 10 self-contained residential flats will retain the buildings original form and structure, restore architectural detailing, remove unsightly later additions to the building and redundant outbuildings, reinstate landscaping and planting and create a communal walled garden for residents.

Walmer House will benefit from modern amenities in addition to a cycle storage and refuse storage. Existing parking will remain in its current position accessed from Ash Hill Road.

Walmer House is located within walking distance of Torquay town centre, providing easy access to everyday amenities including shops, healthcare services, and public transport for residents.

Walmer House Community Homes will be working in close partnership with Armada Property UK Ltd to deliver these residential flats. It is hoped that the project will form part of Torbay Council’s wider ‘Hotels to Homes’ award-winning initiative. This seeks to bring long-term vacant and underused buildings back into use, helping to meet local housing need and deliver high-quality homes across Torbay.
